What causes melasma?
Women who suffer with melasma see brown patches on their face, usually in a symmetrical pattern, left and right. These patches can appear on the upper lip as a “moustache,” between the eyebrows, on the cheeks and on the forehead. It can appear as one or several large patches, or a field of smaller patches.
Melasma can be caused by hormonal changes and many women see the onset of melasma during pregnancy or when they begin hormonal birth control. Sun exposure and irritating ingredients in cosmetics and skin care products can also contribute to the formation or worsening of melasma. It is a very difficult condition to treat and control, and until now women have had few options beyond lightening creams and full-coverage cosmetics.
PicoSure® Skin is ideal for treating melasma and other forms of hyperpigmentation because it uses less heat and more pressure to target the cells responsible for pigmentation without harming the superficial skin. Reducing damage is important to reducing the recurrence of melasma. After treatment, a high SPF sunscreen is imperative in order to maintain results.

How does PicoSure® Skin work?
PicoSure® Skin resurfaces the skin and destroys pigment particles below the surface for a more even tone. The treatment also promotes collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers of the skin for a smoother, firmer appearance. PicoSure’s PressureWave™ uses a unique wavelength of light and a specialized lens to convert laser energy into gentle pressure that activates cells to create new collagen and elastin without burning or damaging the skin. The result is brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin.
What should I expect during my PicoSure® Skin treatment?
With PicoSure® Skin, there's no special prep and procedures typically take about 10-15 minutes. Most patients do not experience pain but sometimes liken the feeling to being snapped with a rubber band. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort during treatment, let your provider know and they can offer a topical anesthetic.
What should I expect after PicoSure® Skin treatment?
Because PicoSure® Skin uses quick bursts of energy which cause less injury to surrounding skin, patients heal more quickly with little discomfort. Some patients experience a few hours of mild redness and a very few have tenderness for up to two days. Most patients are able to resume their regular activities immediately following treatment with no down time.
While you should use a high SPF sunscreen on exposed skin every day, the relatively gentle technology used with PicoSure® Skin means skin is less vulnerable to immediate sunburn or damage compared to some other procedures.
Typical treatment intervals are two to six weeks for pigmented lesions. Treatments for acne scars and wrinkles can be performed every three to four weeks. Your provider will create a personalized treatment plan for you.
How long will my results last?
PicoSure® Skin revitalization treatment results are long-lasting, but some pigment conditions such as age spots or freckles can recur over time, especially with excessive sun exposure. A PicoSure® Skin treatment every six months can help maintain your results. Acne scar improvements, however, are permanent.
Remember, after any laser treatments, the skin is more vulnerable to the aging and burning effects of the sun. Minimize sun exposure and use an SPF30+ daily. If you have been exploring effective anti-aging options but have been afraid to consider laser treatment, it may be time to think again!
