Vaginal Atrophy

Vaginal Atrophy: You don’t have to live with vaginal pain.

The pain of vaginal atrophy is more than an inconvenience; it can impact a woman’s daily life and self-image. Whether your symptoms are dryness, itching, dull pain or chafed tissues, vaginal atrophy can cause decreased libido, diminished sexual arousal, a reduction in sexual satisfaction and other sexual health issues.

What causes vaginal atrophy?

The pain of vaginal atrophy usually results from changes in the surface of the vaginal walls, such as thinning tissue or a lack of natural moisture. Pain can also result from lax vaginal tissues and other pelvic structures after childbirth, which are unable to properly support pelvic organs, including the vagina. Hormonal changes during menopause, pregnancy, breastfeeding or some medical treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy for cancer can also cause vaginal atrophy.

What are the symptoms of vaginal atrophy?

  • Irritation, burning, itching, chafing or other discomfort
  • Dryness due to decreased vaginal secretions
  • Painful intercourse
  • Light vaginal bleeding caused by easily injured vaginal tissue
  • Inflammation of vaginal tissues which can lead to painful urination
  • Vaginal infections
  • Persistent discharge caused by high vaginal pH

Laser treatment for vaginal atrophy

diVa®’s cutting-edge Hybrid Fractional Laser Technology stimulates new cell growth at the surface of the vaginal walls and triggers cellular regeneration, tissue repair and firming under the surface. The tissues produce collagen, “plumping” the vaginal walls and improving moisture production. diVa® uses a highly accurate motorized control system which allows providers to deliver the treatment with increased consistency, limited user variability and decreased procedure time.

diVa® can also tone and tighten lax vaginal structures that have been stretched or loosened by childbirth or other health issues. diVa® laser vaginal therapy can also help minor cases of urinary stress incontinence as the built-up vaginal tissues create better support for the bladder and urinary tract.

Hormonal therapy for vaginal atrophy

Hormone replacement therapy using estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progestin is a preferred treatment for many women. It’s non-invasive and because it is dosed daily it can be fine-tuned to fit every woman’s unique needs – and treatment can then adjust and change along with those needs as well.

Topical estrogen can be effective using lower doses applied directly into the vagina as a cream, pill or ring. Many women find that topical solutions provide better direct relief of vaginal atrophy symptoms than oral estrogen does.

Oral estrogen is taken by mouth and typically contains a higher concentration of estrogen that is distributed throughout the body. Estrogen pills, patches or gel, or a higher-dose estrogen ring can be effective treatments for delivering estrogen throughout the body to treat vaginal atrophy and other symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats and fatigue.
